I can't warn users enough about the fragility of this HD. I had to find out the hard way that these HDs are poorly constructed and if you upset them in the slightest, your data will be GONE with virtually no way to have it repaired. A couple of months ago, my foot got tangled in the cord and the HD took a light tumble on plush carpet from a height of a little over 12 inches.

I purchased the WD Pasport drive to replace a 3.5" USB drive that had failed. It turned out to be a perfect solution to the nightly backups of my desktop PC. It's small (2.5" harddrive), quiet, and only spins up when being used. Since, it is powered by the USB cable and does not require external power, I have one fewer power cable in the wiring mess on the floor.

The drive came formated with fat32 which has a file size limit of little under 4GB. Since I'm using the drive for image backups, I wanted one large file rather many 4GB files to keep track of. So, I had to convert the drive to NTFS using the convert on the commandline. Alternatively, I could have formated the drive for NTFS.

The drive is 320GB which might be too small for you, if you are storing a large volume of photographs or videos on your harddrive.

It's also a bit noisier than the previous one, which together make me suspicious that it's a bad drive that will fail on me at any time. As a result, I constantly back up to the old drive, which I had intended to use as an archive (and do occasional backups of new files to an external drive; my important work is done on the laptop drive and backed up daily to the portable drive). But since the old drive is only half the size, that won't last.

I will probably buy another portable drive from a different manufacturer to try to get one that I feel I can trust. Then I'll just use this as a portable backup drive that I'll occasionally sync. The only thing that I don't like 100% about the drive is that the edges of the case are a little rough in some spots, it would be nice if the cases were a little more stylish. But I'm not trying to win any fashion awards with it, it's a storage device that i carry data around on.

I have an Apple PowerBook G4 (15") and the USB port does not supply enough power to run this HD (the power light comes on but the computer doesn't recognize the drive). SOLUTION: Also purchase a Western Digital USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (Model WDCA029RNN - $9.99). Not carried on Amazon but available through the Western Digital website directly. This cable has 2 USB connectors, the second is solely for supplying additional power. Note that the cable between the two connectors IS long enough to plug into the USB ports on either side of the computer simultaneously. There may be comparable cables on Amazon, but I can vouch that this one works for this HD/computer combo and is long enough.

The drive works fine on newer Macs with the included cable.
