Ever since the USACE (US Army Corps of Engineers) outlawed USB keys, I've had no way of transferring my data from one work computer to another. Several co-workers used the past generation of this hard drive without a problem so I decided to get one. This little thing is fast (with USB 2.0) and extremely quiet. I just have this sitting on top of my desktop tower with the USB cable going to the front. There is a bright white light in front (by the USB connector) that serves as the HD's activity light - it also lets you know when it is safe to disconnect (when you disconnect it in Windows first).

As with all HDs - I formatted this to NTFS and just make sure to disconnect in Windows before I physically pull it out. I got the 320GB one - after formatting shows = 298GB. The black external plastic is extremely easy to scratch (and it shows) so you might want to go with a different color. I went with black because at the time it was $20 cheaper than the other colors. I haul this thing in my laptop bag - it is so thin it slides into any slot without a problem.

I've owned this drive for a few months. Just a warning: You'll never go back to your old way of working with computers. Ever since I found: [...] - I have everything I need on my Passport drive. Even when I'm at home, I plug this thing in and use Pidgin, OpenOffice, and Notepad++ 100% from this drive.

Okay, I bought this less than a year ago to back up my mp3's.
I have it sitting on the floor, plenty of space around it, not too hot, and I hardly ever even TOUCH it, let alone move it, and it's never been dropped or anything like that. I accessed the files on it maybe a dozen times per month, it was mostly used for back up of old files.

Sooooo.... Suddenly, out of the blue, the other day when I went to add some files to it, (still had like 50 gigs of space open on it), it was not accessible. When I checked on Computer Management it said FILE SYSTEM BLANK. Yeah, that's right, blank. The file system is shot, all files are just GONE along with the NTFS file SYSTEM. In other words, in case you need to have it spelled out for you, this piece of s just effin DIED for no reason.

Even if it's still under warranty (I have not checked yet but I'm almost positive it is not), what good is a warranty when all my files are GONE?

As to what to buy instead, I do not know. Have no idea. I bought 3 Seagates. Two of them are still going after about 2 years, but one of them died just around 1 year, just like this one.

My feeling is that ALL external drives are s--t.

Guess I'll try an Apple TV next. Apple seems to be able to make good storage. You don't hear too much about 80-160 gig IPods dying. Or do you?

First, I had to reformat the drive to NTFS instead of FAT32 since I wanted to be able to store large files on the drive if necessary. Second, I had to buy a dual USP power Y cord in order to run the drive from my Dell laptop. There wasn't enough power from one USB socket. Nice external. Causes no problems - just sits there and stores my stuff, which is what I need it to do, obviously.

I had no problems with scratches or dust (why the hell does anyone care about a scratch on the case anyway?), and my transfer speeds were do-able. My only qualm was that the drive only allows you 298 gigs of free space at first. Where did the other 32 gigs go? Kind of a pain to reformat and such just to get them back.
