By now I have 3 WD passport drives and I've ordered two more. For the price, these are great! The only thing I've noticed, which is no big deal anyway, is that not all USB cables will work with this drive. Some of them do not provide enough current to power the drive. But since the drives come with their own USB cable, this is almost a non-issue for most people.

The best thing I would say about this product is that you don't need a separate power source like some other drives I've seen. The drive is powered over the USB cable!

Out of the box the drive was very slow (1.6 GB/30 min.!) in Windows 2000. E-mail support from Western Digital was useless. But, under Ubuntu 8.10 the drive is fast and operated flawlessly right out of the box. I'm very happy with this drive and would have rated it a 5 except for the poor, poor e-mail support from WD.

The only other thing to note is the short USB cable (22") so if your USB port is in the back beware. This apparently is a property of USB 2 not this drive in particular.

I purchased this hard drive as a backup for my daughter's Apple Powerbook. I have one and I thought this would work as well for her. I connected it, worked with it for an hour or so, loaded data in it and took it along for a long trip. After using it for half an hour on my laptop the Passport stoped working; it would not connect to the computer. Thumb drives and other external devices worked all right but the Passport refused to idemtify itself to the computer, essentially preventing me from using the data I had stoted in it. I tried the hardware wizard and all kinds of tweaking but could not get it going. I can feel some vibration, so the unit is working inside, but it won't connect.

My data is locked in the useless Passport, I wasted a lot of time trying to make it workm and I lost my money because I won't return it with my sensitive data in it. This is probably one of the most helpful things I've purchased for my laptop! I own flash drives which are nice for quick transfers or getting that new song from your buddy, but this HDD is the perfect solution for those "bigger" issues.

First off the size is perfect, fits right in the pocket of my laptop case, and takes up very little space on my already overflowing desk. Its whisper quite, and holds a ton of stuff! Its great to take files home from work, and use them vice versa, and the ability to grab this drive instead of a whole laptop, with case, charger...brilliant! Its powered off USB which is also a noteworthy feature, since external power can be a bit of a problem when on job sites and such.

Price is great, storage is great, build quality is great...now one little problem and its very nit picky! The finish on this thing is really stunning, for about 10 minutes...then you notice hairline swirls and scratches in your black gloss finish. I submitted an online claim together with a proof of purchase. After some time FEDEX wrote to me that as a result of an agreement between FEDEX and Ingram Micro all claims must be submitted by the later. So I called Ingram Customer Service and they told me that BuyNow has to contact Ingram to arrange for an Ingram account number and a reference/claimant number to settle this matter.
