The drive depends on a simple software to be recognized and that is the weakest link. This fact presents a dificulty because I cannot install such software at work. Even if I attain permision from the IT department, the software has to be installed on every single station and that is cumbersome to ask....

Apparently, the gadged has an interface circuitry in between the hard drive and the USB, mini B conector and I do not like that fact because, in case of extreme need, I cannot retrieve the 2.5 inch hard drive out of the color casing and install it directly into the motherboard to have access to the information... Or at least, is not easy to do.

Great portable concept with too many IF's... In resolution, I RMA the portable hard drive and I purchase a bigger USB memory stick to exchange information. To back-up information, I continue with my old style... Backing up into a more secure internal secondary hard drive or CD's.

This is a great hard drive (so far). The lack of needing a power supply makes it so much more portable, and it fits really snugly into the CaseLogic case I got with it.

The only real problem I have (and the reason for 4 stars) is the speed of the drive. The stats on the drive said transfers would be comparable to that of FireWire 400 (why I believed that, I have no idea), but it's about half as fast as FW400. I didn't buy the machine to run movies off of it (I have a FW400 drive for that) so the lack of speed doesn't concern me too much.

Anyway, it's served me well so far in the approximately two months I've had it. Being bus-powered makes it convenient. Being completely enclosed makes it impenetrable by dust. It is USB-only, so not ideal for video editors who would be better suited by a FireWire drive. I recently got a new netbook and don't want to gunk it up with photos and music, plus it doesn't have a cd drive. So I decided to get an external hard drive to make it easier to have all my photos, music and work files move between my netbook and desktop without making copy after copy on CD and not knowing what's on where.

My big concern was that external hard drives would not be interchangeable between vista and XP, as now I have 2 xp systems and one vista. but the more I read about it, it depends on what kind of file system you have on your computer, not necessarily what system you are running. All of mine run NTFS. The problem apparently would be if one of my systems was fat32(I think that's the name, forgive me if I'm wrong on the specific spelling) and the others NTFS. You can find this out by going to "my computer" and right clicking on C drive, and then going to properties. There it will tell you about 1/2 way down.

So far this hard drive is easy to use, has the software right on it if you want to use it, and I loaded it up with years of photos, and so far I've only used 4 out of the 250gb(233 after the preloaded software). My biggest fear is that something happens to it, so I'll still be backing up to CD or DVD but it will be great to have everything in one spot vs. searching thru cds when I need something. Plugs in and powers via one USB cord and lights up so you know it has power. Seems pretty portable and it's pretty to boot! I don't know why I waited so long to get an external drive.

Seems I didn't research enough to know it doesn't have it's own backup program embedded. I was spoiled with my Maxtor which did have a great and easy program.
I have to re-format this external drive and then use Windows XP's own program to preform a back up.
I hope it will do what I need but I have yet to sit down an run the re-format disk exercise.
