I am sorry I bought this drive. The 500 Gig storage capacity is very nice to have ... but the big problem is the software included on this device. I don't get it.
1. It doesn't seem to automatically backup unless i manually open the sync software
2. The transfer speed is painfully sloooooow
3. The sync software takes forever to open my files!
4. The black case is pretty but smudges with fingerprints too easily.
5. The Sync software is buggy, it throws a lot of errors everytime i try to open it, which means i cannot access files that were backed up on this device at all because of the encryption feature.
6. The sync software actually encrypts all of your files before saving them, and there is no option to not encrypt. So if you need to simply open a file directly from the device you cannot do that without first opening the slooow, buggy Sync software. Also if you need to you cant simply grab files directly from WD and put them back on your PC, you have to use the sync software. If the sync software is corrupted you cannot access your files at all. This is what is happening to me.
If you are worried about someone finding your device and grabbing sensitive data from it then encryption is for you ... but i am not a secret spy, so i dont need the encryption feature, i should be able to turn it off.
I have since deleted the software that comes on this thing and now i just use the device as extra hard drive space.
I originally bought this drive because my old 160 Gig maxtor drive was full, but now i have resorted to transferring everything off of my old maxtor drive to the WD drive and re-using the maxtor drive for automated backups, while using the WD drive only as additional storage.
The software on this thing is useless.
