This harddrive worked on my pc with win xp out the box. I then purchased a 2009 13inch macbook pro and the WD My Passport worked well with it being instantly recognized by Mac OS X Leopard on my laptop. I was able to partition the drive into two partitions using the disk utility that comes with Leopard. I made one HFS file system to back up my Mac files and one FAT32 partition for compatibility with windows. After partitioning Time Machine instantly recognized the HFS partition and I allowed it to back up all of my Mac files in the background. All the while the Passport was silent and barely got hot.
This drive looks like a real life passport (albeit a thick one!), is quiet and fits in the palm of your hand easily and so far has provided me with no trouble whatsoever.
