I got this back at the tail end of March. Currently, I am using a 500GB model partitioned into two (free space and for time machine). So far things work great. It's plug and play, Leopard immediately asked to make it a time machine drive and it's been bliss ever since. High density storage for a cheap price, but other things seem cheap as well.

Immediately out of the box, the drive is absurdly light. It's almost a feather. The lightness makes me think there is nothing in there to store info on, but somehow it manages to backup data on something inside the case. The instructions say to not move the drive while it's writing/reading (when the light flashes), and that's almost all the time. I fear the day I accidentally bump this seemingly fragile equipment and forever corrupt my data. I immediately bought a Case Logic case for travelling around with it. Finally, I needed to get some files off of my old powerbook G4 I lent out and the drive would not be recognized. The USB light would flash and the drive would make a horrible clicking/grinding sound and the free partition (not time machine) would not be recognized. I thought my drive was dead after a month, but it continued to work on my new MacBook. UPDATE: I believe that creating a time machine partition along with a storage partition makes it impossible for the drive to be interchangeable between computers with and without time machine.

The drive does it's job as a storage space. It works...that's a primary selling point...the price also helps for the amount of storage. Not being able to serve as a standard hard drive between computers takes away an entire star because I'm between computers all day. The lightness also gives the idea of something that is not rugged. By definition, portable means it should travel well. First, I've used many drives from various manufacturers. For external backup/sync I've used 3, the Maxtor/Seagate Black Armor in 160gb and 320gb and the WD Passport Essential 500gb WDME5000TN. The Passport is small and attractive but it seems to be seriously flawed. The sync software placed a copy of the files on my originating HD in addition to the external drive. So, for 100gb of sync I had another 35gb placed on my originating drive. The sync process took about 24 hours. So, I thought that I could live with that if it were a one time thing and future sync would be updates taking a fraction of that time. Not so. I changed a few files only and did a resync next day and 12 hours later it was still doing the sync. I suppose this is not such an issue for a desktop, but it defeats any and all advantages of a laptop with this type of performance. In comparison, the BlackArmor drives did not add the 35gb to my originating drive, took minutes to accomplish the same task (okay, maybe an hour) could sync AND backup, and resync was almost instant. In addition, the BlackArmor drive has a much more secure hardware based encryption and even has an included storage pouch (the WD has none). Please believe that you will be much happier getting a drive other than the WD WDME5000TN. You may pay a bit more and get a bulkier drive by opting for something else, but taking up huge amounts of space on your originating drive, taking hours to accomplish a sync and resync is simply not acceptable to me and shouldn't be acceptable for anyone else. I have a MacBook Pro using OS X 10.5.6, and I've been using Time Machine (supplied software) with Apple's Time Capsule (wireless router and backup system) to wirelessly backup my laptop automatically. I've been using this backup approach for about six months, and it worked great when I used Time Machine's restore function (I installed a new internal hard drive).

But the one thing that I didn't have was an off-site backup. It seems that every time people are interviewed on the news about their house burning down, assuming everyone was safe, they wish that they could have saved their photos since they're irreplaceable. So for me, an off-site backup is of great importance, since my family's photos are priceless.

And that's where the Western Digital Passport Essential drive comes in. I almost always buy LaCie drives since they've worked so well for me, but I decided to try out the WD drive, to see how it would work. To get the drive to work with Time Machine, all I had to do was 1) reformat the drive in the Mac OS format (and this may not be required), 2) in Time Machine's preferences, change to this drive as the backup drive, 3) wait for Time Machine to fully back up to the external WD drive, and 4) change back to Time Capsule as my backup drive.

Or said perhaps more simply, I told Time Machine to use the WD drive, and once done, told it to use the Time Capsule drive again. Time Machine simply picked up where it had left off on my "main" backup drive. I expect that I'll bring home my WD, off-site drive about once a month, and do the switch and switch back.

So a little bit of manual work, but for a lot of benefit. I hate synch software, and refused to look at all the garbage this drive came with.

I got the 320 GB pink model (didnt exist in the 500GB here) and added 78GB of movies, all about 700MB each. I then tried to add a 4GB file (A DVD image) and it errored out (THE DISK IS FULL, TRY AGAIN) because it was FAT32! UGH! Fat32? COME ON!

Deleted all 78GB of movies, reformatted in Windows (NTFS and Quick Format), deleted all the useless software it came with, and then I had no problems putting many many files of all different sizes on it.

Comes with nothing but the drive, and 4 small attached pads on one side. NO CASE or anything, and a 12-inch or so mini-USB cable in white.

The LED on the end is VERY bright, and white. Not good in a dark room.
