I've used USB powered passport drives since they were available - they're convient enough that you actually DO the backups that you should be doing - I'm a photographer, conservation ecologist and GIS user with terabyte storage needs, but a portable lifestyle. And I've seen others lose too many lifetimes of photos and data over the years not to back up everything at least twice. I've had multiple portable drives fail or develop bad sectors, but never had a problem with any of my WD passport drives that I've been lugging around in my laptop bag for years.
Now I can get 500GB in one drive for less than $100. Not as fast as a raid drive but a helluva lot more convenienct.
