Just picked mine up three days ago; nice form factor, variety of colors - (am I the only one that doesn't care about the color of a backup hard drive?) really super easy to use and a fantastic value; (I got mine off the rack at Best Buy for 119.00.

The other thing I really appreciated about it was the packaging just pops open easy; no scissors and steroids required. Very rare for an electronic product!

I could have given it five stars except for one problem; no documentation! I understand that they were trying to make it super user friendly, but the extend of the PDF and written documentation is just about: "Here is how you plug into a USB port" - duhhh!. If you are familiar with backup software and have owned an external backup drive I imagine you will just about love how easy it is; but if you are like me you'll be wondering; "am I using this correctly?". If they simply had put a pdf somewhere in the drive that simply in one page tells you how to use the software it would have saved me a couple hours of trial and error.

BTW: Youtube video's on this product were FRUSTRATING! Everyone wanted to show off the various colors or talk about how "glossy" it is; but couldn't find anything step by step on how to use it to backup my stuff! Thank goodness I've figured it out "I think".

Western Digital please understand that "simple is not the same thing as silent."Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

This external hard drive works great for me. I use it to store photos, music, audiobooks, digital scrapbooking elements, and home videos. The one problem is the slow transfer of data. If you are trying to clean up your computer's hard drive, it can take quite a bit a time to transfer all you files over.

The plus side is that it is perfectly compatible with my Western Digital Media Center, allowing for seamless playback of movies on my tv.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

Western Digital was the first company to come up with these small externals, and they get better every year. I have bougnt several of them, use them a lot, and have never had a problem. Other companies have copied them, but I trust WD because they are the ones who did the R&D - and from experience, I know they got it right. The others may be a bit cheaper, but I don't want to trust my files to the cheapest bidder. I recommend WD to anyone looking for safe, portable, off-site(external) storage. I have two external hard drives. One to backup my entire computer, I keep it plugged in and Mac automatically backs up in regular intervals. Everything about a mac is highly intuitive and this is no exception. I also have this product that I use to keep my media on. I keep photos, music, and movies on this drive and off of my laptop. When I want to access them, all I have to do is plug in the Passport and open iTunes, or open the photos folder.

I would never have had enough room on my laptop to hold all of my media. This product has been so simple to use and to set up for this purpose! Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

I have not had this drive that long. Works great for movies stored on it. I have watched two movies on it,and the picture quality is great.
Also, Western digital gives you three years on the warranty. Most other manufacture's only give three months or a year.
A hard drive can fail within one year. I went with this one for the warranty and Western Digital makes great drives.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

Buy Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black)

I just bought in quick succession two WD My Passport drives: a 500-GB Elite and a 320-GB Essential (actually 465 and 298 "real" binary GB, respectively), both for backup purposes. Since I have both models, I will be posting this review in both product entries.

First of all, why Western Digital? Well, I have two Seagate internal HDDs in my desktop PC and no complaints, but lately that company has been making a lot of serious flops and lost much of its reputation and reliability. I did consider the FreeAgent Go, but user reviews were discouraging, with reliability issues and a mysterious and frequent write error in Windows, for which Seagate offered no solution. Toshiba and Samsung models had even worse reviews - they just "died" after a short while. While Iomega models seemed to be good, their design was a bit awkward and bulky, and they were too expensive. And I didn't want obscure brands, or worse, one of those crappy adaptations of internal laptop HDDs in external USB enclosures - I don't trust those little Frankensteins. WD My Passport's reviews, combined with WD's reputation, were good enough to convince me that it was the best choice.

Why an Elite first? Because price difference at Amazon was only about $10, and I thought it was worth it. I could do without the Elite's matte finish (even though it does look and feel much better), the extra LEDs and the crappy extra software I won't use anyway, but I think the Elite is a much better deal because it offers 5 years' warranty, vs. 3 years for the Essential. Definitely no small thing, especially for HDDs and for such a small price difference.

Then why was my second one an Essential? Because I live in Brazil. I had a visiting friend from the U.S. and he brought me the Elite I had bought here at Amazon and shipped to his home, but Amazon doesn't ship electronics directly here, and even if it did or I shopped elsewhere, freight and customs duties would do away with any advantage. So, I had to buy the second drive locally, and here prices are MUCH higher than in the U.S., and the price difference between models was much greater. So, I had to settle for an Essential, but this was no tragedy - it's a great product as well!

Both are working very well, and I'm extremely satisfied. The performance of both models is exactly the same. Don't expect anything close to an internal HDD's speed: the USB 2.0 interface is much slower, and the drives don't even come close to USB 2.0's nominal transfer rate (480 Mbps, or 60 MB/s). SiSoftware Sandra benchmarked both drives at around 18 MB/s, but this appears to be the market average and a realistic expectation for this kind of drive. But keep in mind that external HDDs are primarily meant and designed for *off-line storage* and *occasional* access, unlike internal system drives, which are meant for fast, *constant* access and where speed is critical.

Attention, Linux users: I tested the drives on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) and it recognized and worked flawlessly with them - and much faster than Windows: up to 28 MB/s, as reported directly by Gnome during a large file transfer.

I reformatted the drives in NTFS because I have some individual files larger than 4 GB, so FAT32 wouldn't do. I'm also using TrueCrypt for privacy - it's great free software, available for Windows, Linux and Mac, and it didn't affect the drives' performance the least bit: its on-the-fly encryption is faster than the drives' transfer rate even with the stronger but slower encryption algorithm "cascades."

The manuals (in PDF files that come on the drive but can also be downloaded from WD) could be better. True, there isn't much to say about a device whose function is obvious, which has no controls and works out of the box, but what about WD's recommendations for cleaning, or detailed technical specs, for example? They aren't there. My only other complaint is that the provided USB cable is way too short, and the drives didn't work with a longer spare I had. But these are really minor issues, and don't even scratch these drives' excellent value. I still give them 5 stars, because the hardware is great, and that's what matters.

Since both of my drives are brand new, I can't tell about their actual durability, but HDDs are ALWAYS a matter of luck by their own nature, and the least that can be said is that WD has a better reliability record than other brands.

For protection, I highly recommend the Assorted Colors EVA Hard Shell Case for Western Digital WD Passport. It's a nearly perfect fit for the drives (the Elite and the Essential are exactly the same size and shape), offers great protection with an outer hard EVA layer and an inner soft foam one, has a neat inside pouch for the USB cable, and it's cheaper than Amazon's current recommendation, the Case Logic Compact Portable Hard Drive Case, which according to user reviews is too large for My Passports (though good for the older and slightly larger Passport line) - the drive slides and bounces inside it.

In short: can you buy a WD My Passport with confidence? Definitely so! Then an Elite or an Essential? I'd advise the Elite because of the longer warranty, but you can't go wrong with an Essential either. Go for them!Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

Buying Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black)

Based on the reviews I read, I recommended this hard drive (and the 250GB version) to friends of mine. It has been weeks and I am still trying to "fix" both hard drives. They both freeze during backups and Windows, in turn, freezes, too. I read their "documents," which are nine pages of PDF nothingness. I went on WD's support page to find answers and nothing concrete. I tried reformatting and they still freeze. One of the computers I am trying to back up has used 67GB of its (internal) hard drive space. Meanwhile, the external hard drive shows 49GB was backed up. This discrepancy could be due to the non-backup of the operating system itself, but still, an 18GB difference? It should be simple to see what files EXACTLY were backed up via WD's synchronization software. Instead, it shows "My Computer" and that's it; clicking on it does nothing. I am a Mac person and Windows people would say, "Well, you're used to having everything done for you because that's what Mac does." Who the hell wants to work at simply backing up an entire hard drive and seeing what the hell you backed up?! Never buying a WD external hard drive again. It's a terrible experience because I recommended these products to people. Pros:
It's TINY. A little bigger than an iPhone. The only way to size down even more is by going to a flash drive!
No power cord necessary; it's powered by your USB drive.
Silent. Doesn't make a peep.
Excellent GB/$ ratio; great price.
No software hassle. All the files you need to get started are right on the drive. Plug it in and go.

Cons:
Not the fastest HD you can get, but still very fast compared to many.

This was a gift for a relative who just emailed me two days ago with this message:

"I have bad news, the Western Digital Hard Drive that you bought me is not working." I wrote back and asked him to send all pertinent information and he responded:"It just stopped working all of a sudden so I downloaded and ran Western Digital diagnostic and it failed their tests so it appears that I lost all of my data."

Please let me know how to exchange this item for a working model. I am also wondering if there have been problems with this particular item. The relative that I sent this to is extremely responsible with all of his things which is why we purchased this for him.

This harddrive worked on my pc with win xp out the box. I then purchased a 2009 13inch macbook pro and the WD My Passport worked well with it being instantly recognized by Mac OS X Leopard on my laptop. I was able to partition the drive into two partitions using the disk utility that comes with Leopard. I made one HFS file system to back up my Mac files and one FAT32 partition for compatibility with windows. After partitioning Time Machine instantly recognized the HFS partition and I allowed it to back up all of my Mac files in the background. All the while the Passport was silent and barely got hot.

This drive looks like a real life passport (albeit a thick one!), is quiet and fits in the palm of your hand easily and so far has provided me with no trouble whatsoever. I would recommend this drive.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

Hi,

I have purchased this Western Digital 2 weeks ago. I wanted to use it for both Mac and pc, so I had to format and partition the hard drive according to the specific formats. For Mac I used Extended Journaled case-sensitive (backing up using Time Machine), and for pc I chose FAT. Now it works perfect on both computers. I must mention that the Mac partition (including all the files) cannot be seen on the pc, so I didn't have to protect it in any way. The price was good at that time, and the capacity is really a big plus. I can hardly sense it running, and the speed is quite awesome. My Dad and I both bought this product (separately) after reading the Amazon reviews on this and the Iomega. The drive itself is fine but it comes with no instructions as to how to use the software. Now usually that means its all a bit of a no-brainer, but not in this case. I still can't get the software to run and therefore am backing up via Norton (or you can do a copy and paste job). Dad got the software to run (each time you want to run the backup you proceed as if you are going to reinstall the software) but was disappointed with the speed and cumbersome process. Yes, it works very well. The software that it comes with ... well, it is not needed on many of the modern OSes like Windows XP onwards, Linux or MAC. I always remove such preloaded software using Linux first. Some USB pendrives are worse -- you simply cannot delete the loaded software because the gadget presents itself as 2 USB devices -- one as read-only drive with an auto-executioble file (INF) in it and the other is the pre-partitioned space for you. Once you insert this pendrive in Windows XP, before you know it that read-only drive is already executing god knows what in your PC!

This Passport has none of that BS other than just some loaded software and a FAT32 filesystem. Max speed of transfer while copying a set of 300 MB+ files from this to the PC was about 30 MB/Sec on Linux 2.6 kernel based os. That rate will obviously go down for a mix of smaller sized files.

Care in handling is advised because hard disks are fragile no matter what the laptop makers say. This Passport uses a laptop hard disk inside with a good USB 2.0 USB-IDE controller.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

This passport is great. Very small, I keep in my computer bag. The only thing I don't like, when you install for the first time it tries to install backup software. I'd rather it give me the choice to be just a mass storage or use their software. I did unistall their software and now use it as a mass storage and use my own backup software. Also, if you have an older pc, the USB port may not be powerful enough to run it. You'll need a "Y" USB cable that provides more power. I think the unit should ship with a "Y" usb cable. Even with this, I like having the passport. Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black) Right now

The description says it works with Mac. However, it doesn't work with my Mac 17" Powerbook G4. Many Powerbooks and other Mac Laptops do not provide enough power through a single USB port for the WD Passport(tm) external USB hard drive to work correctly. On the WD website, they offer to sell you an additional USB power booster cable which is a Y shape cable with connects to 2 USB ports on the computer. However, the additional cable offered by WD is too short to reach the USB port on the right side and the USB port on the left side of the 17" Powerbook. There is no cable I can find that fits the WD hard drive and is long enough to reach 2 USB ports on the opposite sides of my powerbook at the same time. So, there is no way for me to use the drive. It is useless!!! The description of this product is misleading!!!!! I wish I had been warned about this. I never would have brought this drive.
I have heard the Seagate portable hard drive for Mac (also sold by amazon.com) is a better alternative for Mac users because you can choose to connect it with a single Firewire cable or with USB cables. The cables are included with the drive. Also, included is a case, and it has a 5 year warranty. Wish I had brought the Seagate portable hard drive for Mac in the first place.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

Problem:
A WD My Passport external USB hard drive is not detected when connected to a Mac PowerBook Laptop, Mac Brook Pro, or Mac G4.
Cause:
Many 15" and 17" Mac PowerBook and Mac Book Pro Laptops do not provide enough power through a single USB port for the WD Passport(tm) external USB hard drive to work correctly. The WD Passport(tm) external USB hard drive requires a minimum of 1000Ma (Milliamps) of power for proper usage.
So Western Digital forces you to buy and additional power supply and/or cables for it to work!!! You can purchase a WD Passport(tm) Power Supply or a USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable from Accessories page on the WD Online Store. So that adds to the cost. PLUS, IF YOU HAVE TO BUY AN ADDITIONAL POWER SUPPLY, IT'S NOT AN EASY PORTABLE JUST PLUG AND GO DRIVE AS ADVERTISED! I've owned two WD Passport drives and both of them have stopped in a little over a year - just enough for the warranty to run out. Suddenly all computers just stop recognizing the drive even if it's connected and the lights are on.

If you want to keep your drive and your data, go with a Seagate.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).

So far it's working great for me, light weight, small, going good! I'm using the Windows Vista backup tool. It took a long time to do the first backup (250GB) - sth like 10h, but now the weekly backup takes around 20 minutes. The only downfall is that it doesn't come with a case.Get more detail about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black).
