This USB portable hard drive is exactly what I needed. The drive is more than fast enough for everyday use as extra storage.
I keep all my files from work on this portable drive. I just work from the drive and have no issues with speed. The laptop I use was bought in 2005 and doesn't require any special cables to power the drive. I just pulled it out of the box, plugged it in, and was able to immediately transfer over all of my work.
I do not use the software that comes preloaded. It would be useful if the drive is only meant as backup and required synchronization with your main computer. As I am looking for extra storage space and not backup, it doesn't get used. However, it does not take up a significant amount of drive space so it is possible to keep it without any inconvenience in case it is needed later.
