This is the second Western Digital portable hard drive I've used. One is a 320gB drive and the other is, of course, this 500gB drive. Both are dependable and have fast access times for what I use them for. And the ability to just use them via a simple USB 2.0 connection is a real big plus. I also think that these can serve video editing purposes well, provided that you are only editing standard definition video (as opposed to HD video). The hard drives hybernate after several minutes of inactivity, though. So users may notice a delayed reaction when operating the drive. After a little over 45 minutes of use, the drive is mildly warm. But I've never noticed the drives being uncomfortably warm so I don't see overheating or thermal shut downs to be a possibility.
There are a few less expensive alternatives on the market that offer the same capacity but I doubt they are as dependable as this WD drive.
